Welcome back to school Ray Warriors! It has been so nice to get back in the classroom. This week Ms. Kruzel & I have introduced ourselves to students and performed classroom assessments to see where students currently stand academically. Some students (depending on grade level) are NWEA these first two weeks as well. We will be assisting all students with testing accommodations. If you would like to know any of the results, please message me on Dojo or send an email to [email protected].
Lastly, we sent a packet home with a letter introducing ourselves, a consent letter, and handouts for connecting to Dojo and Seesaw. The consent letter is for Ms. Kruzel's university classes requesting permission to video or photograph her in action. Dojo will be a way that I can communicate regular classroom information with you. Seesaw is what we will be using to keep track of our assignments and you will be able to see your child's portfolio of work in my class. We are happy to help if you need assistance.

Join Ray parents and staff to view and discuss the first episode of the critically-acclaimed documentary series, America to Me. The series explores issues of race and inequity at Oak Park River Forest High School. From 6:00-8:00 on Thursday, April 4, we will gather to eat, watch, talk about the episode and how it relates to our own experiences. 7th and 8th graders are welcome to attend with a parent. Childcare will be provided for younger children. Reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
Hi Students & Families,
This week 5th grade students are testing and next week 4th grade students are testing. Students are still being seen for math as per usual, but not for English-Language arts. They are being provided with assignments to complete in their homerooms. Please make sure your children get enough rest and eat a solid breakfast to provide them with the energy necessary for the assessment. Thank you all!

Hi Students & Families,
This week you can expect your child's progress report to come home on Friday. As always please reach out with any concerns. Homework effort is looking much better I encourage you to please review your child's work as accuracy is the goal rather than completion. There were inquiries about a change in the reading log format, let's give it a try for quarter four. 4th Grade: This week we will be continuing thinking about the Civil Rights Movement and the impact it has had on us today by creating an art project. Students will paint a self-portrait and answer the question: Thinking about the sacrifices made during the Civil Rights Movement, how will you be a peaceful changemaker? In math, students are diving deeper into equivalent fractions. They just learned how to make equivalent fractions using multiplication today! 5th Grade: SW and TM will participate in the same project as fourth grade students, but will need to elaborate on how they will be peaceful changemakers. In math, we are working on comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals. There are several homework sheets this week; however, comparing decimals should not take students too long to complete. 6th grade: SK is working on using proper verb tense in his journal. In math, we are focusing on multiplication and division facts for the 3's.

Hi Students & Parents,
I hope this message finds you all well and that you enjoyed the three day weekend. Students will participate in My Very Own Library again this week and will come home with brand new books to read! This Friday, Ray will be hosting an international movie night. Please see the picture below for more information:
4th Grade: We are reading the graphic novel March detailing important events from the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of Congressman John Lewis. Students are defining words from the text and answering questions that require them to use textual and visual clues from the book to support their thinking. In math, students are working on long division. This week we will look at using the area model to solve division problems. A note sheet for student (and parent) reference will be attached.
5th Grade: Students are also reading March and doing the same activity as fourth graders with higher level vocabulary words and more challenging questions. In writing, we are researching a figure from the Harlem Renaissance to write an informational piece on. In math students had the opportunity to redo their quiz on dividing whole numbers and fractions today after reviewing all together. Most students showed improvement. We will move on decimal place value for the remainder of the week. Students will need to read and write numbers in standard, written, and expanded form. 6th Grade: SK is using a new sight word book where he unscrambles a sentence, glues it down, then writes the sentence and draws a corresponding sentence. We are continuing to work on identifying 3-D shapes in the classroom.

Ray Parents,
At roughly 12 pm, the school office was notified by CPD that students should not leave the building as they looked for an armed robbery suspect in the neighborhood. A few minutes later, officers came to secure the building. With their support, we did a brief full-building lockdown as a safety precaution to ensure our building was safe. We also kept all recess indoors during that time. By 12:45, CPD let us know that the suspects were apprehended. We want to assure you that all students were safe during the process and remain safe. As always, our teachers and counselors were available for any students who may have been impacted during this event. Thank you for your support, Megan & Gayle Dear CPS Families and Friends,

We had such a great time at the Logan Center! The artists were really engaging and kept us all dancing in our seats. Check out some of the photos and videos below.
Hi Students & Families,
Thank you so much for your patience with me! Students do have homework this week and most of them received it at the end of the day. We are wrapping up NWEA testing this week and taking a field trip. As always, please email me if you'd like to know how your child scored. We also have a new student teacher! This January through April, Ms. Montney will be our student teacher as Ms. Zelnick has moved on to teaching in Ms. Webb's room. She will be sending home the same forms that Ms. Zelnick did to acknowledge your consent for videos and photos used for university purposes. On Thursday we are taking a field trip to the Logan Center for the Arts. We will see Bomba Con Buya, a traditional Puerto Rican music and dance group. To support understanding, all students will learn about triangular trade and its influence on Puerto Rico. We will also learn about the elements of music and identify them within Bomba music. It should be a lot of fun! Please sign and return field trip slips by Wednesday. Only fourth graders will need to bring a lunch as we will return after their lunch period. 4th Grade: Math students are working on multiplying a multi-digit number by a single digit number using three different methods (Partial Products, Area Model, Standard Algorithm). Students will also be working on drafting a paragraph with complete sentences and sound ideas. We will also start working on disseminating information the wax museum project. Please read the books I send home Tuesday so that we can start working on Thursday afternoon. 5th Grade: Math students are working on multiplying a single digit whole number by a fraction. Your child may need support with changing their answer from an improper fraction to a mixed number or reducing. Students are working on strengthening their opinion based writing as well as putting the finishing touches on their persuasive writing. Students are also working on identifying the main idea in a non-fiction text. 6th Grade: Students are wrapping up the Crossover. SK is continuing his work on 3-D shapes. SK is also focusing on responding to comprehension questions. 7th Grade: MD is working on improving his comprehension using a fictional text.
