CPS Packets Updated May 4, 2020 Dear Families, What a school year this has been! While I wish nothing more than to be at school and learning with your children, that is not possible at this time. Let's do our best to make sure children continue learning while at home. Each of my students has hard copy resources you can use during this time. This includes a biography project, reading passages, and either math word problems or data and geometry problems depending on their area of need. You can also supplement your child’s learning with the online tools we use in class. Please check your Dojo messages for login information. We use Prodigy (math), RazKids (leveled online library), Epic (online library), and I just signed up for Lalilo for our beginning readers. Updates from Ray administration:

Hello Families,
It is so wonderful to be back at school with your children. We have jumped back right where we left off without losing too much steam. The scheduling of this upcoming week is a bit tricky so I wanted to share the upcoming important dates. Friday marks the end of the quarter when all grades must be finalized. I have not updated gradebook since the strike, but you can expect your child's grades to look a lot like their progress reports. I typically do not make appointments for conferences, but look forward to seeing you. Please drop by 106 at any time on Wednesday to chat about your child's progress and receive a copy of their IEP report card. Here are those important dates:

A Reminder About Our Plans to Keep Students Safe During a Work StoppageDear Parents and Families, As CPS and Mayor Lightfoot’s Office continue working toward fair contract agreements with our teachers and school support staff, we want to remind you that classes will be canceled should a work stoppage begin on October 17th. School buildings will be open for students who need a safe place to stay during the day, and principals and non-unionized support staff will be available to greet students, engage them in activities, and serve three meals — breakfast, lunch, and supper. Students are encouraged to attend their regular school, but we will welcome students at any CPS school that serves their grade level. If your child has medical needs or is in need of special education and/or nursing support, please be aware that the staff who regularly provide those services to your child will not be available during a work stoppage. As work stoppage days are not regular school days, IEPs will not be implemented. We will, however, ensure contract nurses are available to support students as needed. Chicago Public Libraries will also be open, along with a limited number of parks, Safe Haven sites, and other community partner sites. To find CPS and non-CPS sites near your home that will welcome students during a potential work stoppage, please use our site locator. More information about our contingency plans can be found in our Contingency Plan Overview for Families and on cps.edu/contingencyplan. If you choose to send your child to a CPS school during a work stoppage, please register your child at cps.edu/contingencyplan. Although registration is not mandatory, it helps ensure we have enough support staff and meals to serve children. Hello Families,
Now that we have gotten our procedures and routines together we can start focusing on content more heavily. During English Language Arts we do centers to provide small group and individualized instruction to all students. Room 106 is shared with Ms. McGehee, the English as a New Language (ENL) teacher. Her focus is reading, writing, speaking, and listening which also encompasses all that we do. Our centers are:
In math students are working on a more streamlined curriculum than Everyday Math with the exception of J.M. who is solely working on NWEA skills and his IEP goals. I am meeting students where their needs indicate based on an assessment we did at the start of the school year and helping them build up to grade level and hopefully get ahead. We are also continuing to work with Touch Math to build fluency with addition and subtraction. Third graders are getting to work right away with multiplication and division fact families to get a head start. One math tool we have started using recently is an online game called Prodigy. Kids love playing this Zelda-like adventure game and don't even realize they are working on math skills. It's free and a good alternative to other video games as it's educational and students actually enjoy it. I will send messages on ClassDojo with students' login information by the end of the week.

Math homework went home yesterday. They are NWEA related task cards intended to help your child grow in math according to where the currently are. I would like all packets turned in on November 1st, but if you finish before I would be more than happy to send the next one so your child can progress quicker. Hello Families,
This week students will begin coming to room 106 regularly per their IEP minutes. We will begin by setting classroom expectations and practicing routines in addition to getting to know each other a bit. We will also start using classroom technology towards the end of the week. If you haven't already done so please connect to Dojo and Seesaw. Last week third grade students wrapped up beginning of the year NWEA MAP testing. Second graders will be testing on Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure your children are well rested and eat a good breakfast.
